Meeting Highlights
47th Task Leaders Meeting

The Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) on Sustainable Combustion held its 47th Task Leaders Meeting (TLM) in Ischia, Italy on June 22-26, 2025. TLM provides a unique opportunity for the leaders of the Combustion TCP collaborative tasks to bring all the task participants together for detailed technical exchanges, as well as programmatic coordination. Ten separate TCP tasks reported at the meeting: Systems Analysis, Policy Briefs for Hydrogen and Its Vector Fuels, net-Zero Carbon Engine Technologies, Gas Engines, Gas Turbines, Fuel Injection Processes, Soot, Solid Fuel Combustion, Combustion Chemistry, and Exhaust Aftertreatment Treatment Systems. More than 45 researchers, program managers, and industry representatives attended from all 12 countries participating in the TLM, plus other countries.
Brief overview presentations were given by each Task Leader. These were followed by detailed technical presentations from task participants. The technical content of the meeting centered on internal combustion engines for hard-to-electrify sectors of transportation and power generation and on utilization of sustainable, non-fossil fuels in these sectors. There were two invited speakers. Alberto Vassallo, Senior Manager, Advanced Engineering at Dumarey Automotive Italia S.p.A. spoke on, “Powering the Future: Evolution of Internal Combustion Engines and the Path to Zero-Carbon Solutions.” Nicole Wermuth , CSO for LEC spoke on, “Renewable Fuels in Large Internal Combustion Engine Applications.” Overall, the meeting provided significant interaction and discussion among the TLM participants and others attending.
The TLM was organized by Alessandro Montanaro (TCP Chair for 2025) and Luigi Allocca (TCP Delegate) both from CNR, Istituto di Scienze e Tecnologie per l’Energia e la Mobilità Sostenibili. The 48th TLM will be held October 18-23, 2026 in Busan, Korea.
46th Task Leaders Meeting

The Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) on Sustainable Combustion held its 46th Task Leaders Meeting (TLM) in Chicago, Illinois, USA on August 4-8, 2024. TLM provides a unique opportunity for the leaders of the Combustion TCP collaborative tasks to bring all the task participants together for detailed technical exchanges, as well as programmatic coordination. Ten separate TCP tasks reported at the meeting: Systems Analysis, Policy Briefs for Hydrogen and Its Vector Fuels, net-Zero Carbon Engine Technologies, Gas Engines, Gas Turbines, Fuel Injection Processes, Soot, Solid Fuel Combustion, Combustion Chemistry, and Exhaust Aftertreatment Treatment Systems. More than 45 researchers, program managers, and industry representatives attended from all 12 countries participating in the TLM, plus other countries.

The technical content of the meeting was on the new focus of the TCP on internal combustion engines for hard-to-electrify sectors of transportation and power generation and on utilization of sustainable, non-fossil fuels in these sectors. An invited presentation by Micheal Wang of Argonne National Laboratory provided a summary of the status of the widely used GREET systems analysis modeling tool and results. Overall, the meeting provided significant interaction and discussion among the TLM participants and others attending.
The TLM was organized by Gurpreet Singh (the TCP Chair and US delegate) of the US DOE and Paul Miles (a US delegate) of Sandia National Laboratories. The 47th TLM will be held in June 22-26, 2025, in Ischia, Italy.
45th Task Leaders Meeting

The Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) on Sustainable Combustion held its 45th Task Leaders Meeting (TLM) in Göteborg, Sweden on June 18-21, 2023. TLM provides a unique opportunity for the leaders of the Combustion TCP collaborative tasks to bring all the task participants together for detailed technical exchanges, as well as programmatic coordination. Nine separate TCP tasks reported at the meeting: Systems Analysis, Policy Briefs for Hydrogen and Its Vector Fuels, net-Zero Carbon Engine Technologies, Gas Engines, Gas Turbines, Fuel Injection, Soot, Solid Fuel Combustion and Combustion Chemistry. This year was the first full in-person meeting since the pandemic with more than 57 researchers, program managers, and industry representatives attending from all 12 countries participating in the TLM and other countries.
Brief overview presentations were given by each Task Leader. These were followed by detailed technical presentations from task participants. The technical content of the meeting reflected the new focus of the TCP on internal combustion engines for hard-to-electrify sectors of transportation and power generation and utilization of sustainable, non-fossil fuels in these sectors. Contributions from invited speakers from Volvo and HUG Engineering provided information on the transition to fossil free heavy-duty transport and exhaust gas aftertreatment for large engines, respectively. In addition, each task held a breakout session to discuss future directions, and a poster session that included additional research by students was held. Overall, the meeting provided significant interaction and discussion among the TLM participants and others attending.
The TLM was organized by the Öivind Anderson (the TCP Chair) of Lund University. The 46th TLM will be held in August of 2024 in the United States in Chicago.
44th Task Leaders Meeting

The 44th Task Leaders Meeting (TLM) was held between July 31st and August 3rd, 2022, in Sendai, Japan. The meeting was a hybrid meeting with both in-person and virtual attendance. Each Task Leader presented an overview of their task which was followed by detailed technical presentations from their task participants.
Nine separate Combustion TCP tasks reported at the TLM: Systems Analysis, Policy Briefs for Hydrogen and Its Vector Fuels, net-Zero Carbon Engine Technologies, Gas Engines, Gas Turbines, Sprays, Soot, Solid Fuel Combustion and Combustion Chemistry. The Systems Analysis task is providing science-driven LCA analysis of the most prominent and realistic solutions for cost and time effective approaches for reducing carbon emissions in transport technologies based on the TCP research.
TLM continues to provide a unique opportunity for the leaders of the Combustion TCP collaborative tasks to bring all the task participants together for detailed technical exchanges as well as programmatic coordination. Twenty-six researchers and program managers from Combustion TCP member countries attended in-person daily and another approximately 15 participated virtually. More than 45 technical presentations were given at the meeting. The TLM was hosted and organized by the Tsuneaki Ishima (the Combustion TCP Chair for 2021-2022) and Kotaro Tanaka of Japan.
The 45th TLM will be held in mid-June in 2023 in Goteborg, Sweden.
43rd Task Leaders Meeting
The 43rd Task Leaders Meeting (TLM) was held September 20-22, 2021. The meeting was virtual due to the ongoing pandemic. Each task held virtual workshops prior to the meeting. Task Leaders then presented summaries at the TLM. A representative from the AMF TCP also joined the meeting and presented an AMF overview and potential areas for collaboration.
At this year’s TLM, three important new tasks for the future were added to the TLM discussions: Systems Analysis, Hydrogen and Its Vector Fuels, net-Zero Carbon Engine Technologies. The Systems Analysis task will provide science-driven higher-level analysis of the most prominent and realistic solutions for cost and time effective decarbonization of transport technologies based on the TCP research. Seven existing tasks, plus another new task under development were also discussed. The seven existing tasks included: Gas Engines, Gas Turbines, Low-Temperature Combustion, Sprays in Combustion, Soot, Solid Fuels and Combustion Chemistry. The Low-Temperature Task was concluded at this TLM. The task under development is focusing on exhaust aftertreatment for clean, efficient, near-zero carbon emission engine technologies.
TLM continues to provide a unique opportunity for the leaders of the Combustion TLM collaborative tasks to bring all the task participants together for detailed technical exchanges as well as programmatic coordination. More than 40 researchers and program managers attended daily from the 11 member countries. The TLM was organized by the Sebastian Kaiser, Alba Dieguez Alonso, and Frank Behrendt (Combustion TCP Chair for 2019-2021) of Germany.
